4D Number Plates (5mm Depth)
Understanding 4D 5mm Number Plates
This guide provides detailed information about 4D number plates with a 5mm character depth, a popular option for vehicle owners looking to enhance their vehicle's appearance while adhering to legal standards.
What Defines a 4D 5mm Number Plate?
4D number plates are distinguished by their raised characters. The "5mm" specifically refers to the thickness of the laser-cut acrylic characters which are bonded to the plate surface. This construction creates a prominent, three-dimensional effect.
Key Features and Construction:
- Character Depth and Material: Characters are precisely laser-cut from 5mm thick acrylic, offering a distinct, raised profile. This process ensures sharp, well-defined edges for each letter and number.
- Manufacturing Process: Advanced laser-cutting technology is employed to produce the characters, ensuring accuracy and consistency. These are then applied to a British Standard 145e compliant reflective backing plate.
- Sizing and Customisation:
- Standard UK Size: The default dimensions are 520mm x 111mm, suitable for most vehicles.
- Shortened Plates: Plates can be custom-cut to a shorter length, depending on the registration number. A 16mm margin is typically maintained around the registration for a balanced look.
- Hexagonal Plates: An alternative shape, often chosen for specific vehicle aesthetics, can also be sized according to the registration.
- Legal Compliance (UK):
- DVLA Conformation: 4D style plates, including those with 5mm raised characters, are considered legal for road use in the UK, falling under the regulations for 3D (raised character) plates.
- Font and Spacing: All plates are produced using the mandatory Charles Wright font and adhere to correct spacing requirements.
- Manufacturer Details: Plates include the manufacturer's name (Utopia Plates) and postcode, as legally required.
- British Standard: Plates are certified to BS AU 145e, the current UK standard for number plates, indicating they meet requirements for durability, reflectiveness, and visibility.
Obtaining Road-Legal 4D 5mm Plates:
- Document Verification: To comply with DVLA regulations for the supply of number plates, verification of original identity and entitlement documents is necessary.
